56th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Birthday Convocation and For My People Awards at Jackson State University

January 19 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

With a long and distinguished career as a scholar and public servant, who spent a decade representing Ward 2 on the Jackson City Council, Dr. McLemore was a founding member and elected vice-chair of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) in 1964. He was one of 64 MFDP delegates who attempted to unseat the state’s all-white regular Party at the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City in August of 1964.
His son, Leslie McLemore II, will receive the For My People – Doris Derby Legacy Award for his work as an attorney and activist. The For My People Awards recognize individuals and institutions for their indelible contributions to African American history and culture.
Be sure to reserve your tickets online here before they’re gone or contact the Margaret Walker Center at 601-979-3935 or mwa@jsums.edu.
