Aurelia Brooks

January 18, 1931-May 11, 2021. Aurelia Ruth Brooks, daughter of Harriet Ferguson and Rio Grande Roberts Jr., died on May 11, 2021, at the age of 90, in Los Angeles, California. She was raised in Washington DC, and moved to Los Angeles with husband, Dr. Warren R. Brooks Jr. in the 1950’s.
Aurelia worked nationally and locally for the Urban League and on several political campaigns. She felt that her most rewarding work was co-founding the California Afro American Museum, in 1977, alongside former U.S. Congresswoman and LA County Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke. She was the museum’s first Director. Aurelia is survived by her husband of 69 years, Dr. Warren Brooks Jr.; their children and their spouses Randy and Jovana Lara-Brooks, and Lisa and Anthony Turner Washington Jr. (Tony); and their seven grandchildren: Brandon Austin, Cameron Alexander, Lara Alexandra, Hunter Antonio, Ava Aurelia, Anthony Turner (Scotty), and Lena Gabriella.
