Roots of Revolution: Reaching Back | Pushing Forward
8.07.2019 – 8.10.2019 | Jackson, Mississippi
The Association of African American Museums is excited to announce plans for its 41ST Annual Conference, August 7-10, 2019 in Jackson, Mississippi. The theme of the Conference, Roots of Revolution: Reaching Back | Pushing Forward, signifies a chance to usefully look to our shared past to inform and empower the crafting of our futures amid challenging times.
Museums, archives, libraries, galleries and historic sites have never been neutral, and African American cultural institutions have played central roles in revolutionary movements as we have reached back to the lessons of our past in order to push forward. We have created and sustained spaces of liberation that have fostered black racial and social consciousness and subverted systems of oppression.
This conference will focus on the reach and the push requisite in leading people, developing systems, improving organizations, protecting collections, and impacting futures through the preservation of African American art, history and culture. We will explore how technologies can extend institutions’ capacities to make their collections and programs more accessible to users and the necessity of collaboration in a revolutionary digital age.
As a trusted convener of dynamic multi-racial, multi-generational, and multi-disciplinary professionals throughout the cultural sector, AAAM cherishes the opportunity to create space for you to connect with former colleagues and friends, while building new alliances and enriching relationships.
