Dear AAAM Members and Supporters,
It is with profound sadness that I share the passing of one of AAAM’s cherished former Board Members and a steadfast supporter, Fath Davis Ruffins. Fath’s dedication to the field of African American museums and her unparalleled contributions to the Smithsonian Institution leave an indelible legacy that will forever inspire us.
Fath began her incredible journey at the Smithsonian in 1981, where she devoted herself to advancing the preservation and interpretation of African American history and culture. Over the decades, she not only excelled as a scholar but also as a compassionate mentor. She always made time to cultivate relationships with emerging scholars, historians, and curators, generously sharing her wisdom and guidance. For so many of us, Fath was not only a mentor but a friend—someone who listened, encouraged, and uplifted everyone fortunate enough to know her.
The work Fath did for and with AAAM will never be forgotten. From her thoughtful conference proposals to her radiant joy when discussing AAAM’s history, her influence has left an indelible mark on our organization. She worked tirelessly to strengthen our field, and we are all better because of her unwavering dedication and passion.
Sometimes it’s hard to find the words to express the loss of someone who meant so much to so many, and in this instance, I find myself struggling quite a great deal. Fath’s voice and presence will remain deeply missed but will continue to echo through the countless lives she touched and the history she helped preserve.
