“Where Do We Go From Here?”: Interpreting and Preserving the African American Civil Rights Movement.

October 17, 2024 - October 19, 2024

The year 2024 marks several significant anniversaries for the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, including the 70th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Brown v. Board of Education/Briggs v. Elliott and the 60th anniversary of the Freedom Summer and the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. More than a generation later, it is important to assess the legacy of the movement and its historical impact.

In partnership with the National Park Service, the Center for Civil Rights History and Research at the University of South Carolina is hosting an inaugural conference, “Where Do We Go From Here?”: Interpreting and Preserving the African American Civil Rights Movement.

The three-day conference promises a rich and diverse program, delving into the meaning and memory of the African American Civil Rights Movement in historical studies, popular media, and public history interpretation. It will include panel discussions, a poster session, public events, tours, and an abundance of networking opportunities for civil rights history and research practitioners and scholars.
