Smithsonian Advocacy

I want to take a moment to address a deeply concerning development that directly impacts our field. The most recent Executive Order threatens to cut federal funding for any museum within the Smithsonian that is deemed to promote so-called “divisive ideology.” This is a direct attack on the vital work museums do to preserve and share the full, honest history of our nation—including the rich and complex stories of African American history and culture.

The AAAM Board and I are actively monitoring this situation, and we will discuss strategies and ways our field can respond during our March Quarterly Meeting this weekend. Additionally, I will be meeting with leaders from other museum associations to coordinate a unified response and identify further actions we can take together.

These Executive Orders are designed to exhaust and discourage us—but we will not be deterred. Our mission remains clear: As the single representative and principal voice of the African American museum movement, AAAM is dedicated to strengthening and advocating for institutions and individuals committed to preserving African-derived cultures. We will continue to uplift, protect, and champion the organizations that safeguard African American history and culture.

We will share updates and ways you can take action soon. Thank you for your unwavering dedication and support.

In solidarity,

Vedet Coleman-Robinson, Ph.D.
