AAAM2026 Conference Reception Themes and Attire Recommendations

As part of the 2026 Association of African American Museums Conference, attendees are invited to experience three unforgettable evenings celebrating community, culture, creativity, and Black excellence across some of Philadelphia’s most iconic institutions.
Wednesday, August 19 | Philadelphia Zoo
- Theme: Opening Ceremony
- Attire: Museum/Organization Merchandise
Kick off the conference with a vibrant welcome reception at the Philadelphia Zoo. Guests will be greeted through a Spirit Tunnel featuring cultural and heritage organizations from across the region before enjoying an evening centered on connection and celebration. Highlights include For the Love of Us, an affirming community experience, opportunities to explore the Zoo, and interactive games celebrating Black history, culture, and joy.
Thursday, August 20 | The Barnes Foundation
- Theme: Celebrating the Sounds of Freedom
- Attire: White Party with a Splash of Ankara
Set against the world-renowned collections of the Barnes Foundation, this elegant evening explores the power of music, creativity, and cultural expression. The reception begins with cocktails and networking opportunities, followed by a special performance by the Marian Anderson Choir. Guests will have the opportunity to participate in AAMP Disruption: AAAM Style, an interactive showcase designed to inspire storytelling, artistic exploration, and audience participation.
Friday, August 21 | African American Museum in Philadelphia
- Theme: Jubilee: Celebrating the African American Museum in Philadelphia at 50
- Attire: Purple Rain and Shades of Royalty
The conference concludes with a jubilant celebration honoring the African American Museum in Philadelphia’s 50th Anniversary. This community-inspired block party experience features DJ Diamond Kutz, food trucks, games, cultural activations, and opportunities to connect with colleagues and community members. Signature moments include The State of Us: Voices on the Issues Shaping Our Time, a thought-provoking conversation reflecting on contemporary issues through a historical lens, followed by a headline entertainment performance to close out the
conference in style.
