New Report Release: Black Museums Staffing & Salary Needs — A National Snapshot

The Association of African American Museums (AAAM), in partnership with People, Places & Design Research, is pleased to share the 2024 Staffing & Salary Needs Report, the first national study dedicated exclusively to understanding workforce capacity across African American museums.

Drawing on robust participation from museums of all sizes, this report highlights the field’s most urgent staffing challenges and opportunities—from hiring needs and salary competitiveness to professional development and long-term sustainability. The findings illuminate what Black museums need to strengthen their teams, support their missions, and continue serving their communities with excellence.

AAAM extends deep gratitude to every institution that participated. We recognize the significant effort required for small and micro-staffed museums to complete a comprehensive survey while managing daily operations, and we honor their commitment to advancing collective knowledge for the field.

The full report is now available for download and will be shared with IMLS and other partners to help guide future advocacy, funding strategies, and workforce development efforts for African American museums nationwide.
