Dear AAAM Members and Supporters:

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the Association of African American Museums (AAAM), I am pleased to send our heartiest congratulations to Mr. Lonnie Bunch on his historic appointment as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Mr. Bunch has served as the founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture since 2005. The museum, which opened in September 2016, is the largest in the nation dedicated to the history and culture of African American people. Mr. Bunch is a long-time member of AAAM and has served on our Board of Directors. We are appreciative of everything that he has done for our Association throughout our existence and are thankful for his continued support! Throughout his career, Mr. Bunch has made intentional and huge strides for African American history and culture and AAAM is excited to see this work continue through his new role as the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution—the first African American to hold this position in the 173 -year history of the institution’s existence! His visionary and inclusive leadership within museums inspires and elevates us all. AAAM is proud to celebrate this critical moment, and we are thankful to have been allowed to not only work with Mr. Bunch but also work beside him!

Congratulations Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch, III!
