It is with great pride and excitement that we join many across the cultural heritage and preservation communities in congratulating Brent Leggs on his unanimous election as the 11th President and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
For more than twenty years, Brent has been a steadfast advocate for preserving the places, stories, and legacies that help tell a fuller and more accurate American story. Through his visionary leadership of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, he has elevated the importance of African American historic places and demonstrated how preservation can serve as a powerful tool for education, remembrance, healing, and community building.
Brent’s election represents more than a leadership transition; it reflects the growing recognition that our nation’s history is strongest when it embraces the contributions, experiences, and voices of all people. At a time when many of our institutions continue to navigate complex conversations about history, memory, and identity, his leadership brings both experience and an unwavering commitment to ensuring that all stories are preserved for future generations.
As we commemorate 100 years of organized efforts to preserve and elevate African American history and culture, while also preparing to mark America’s 250th anniversary, I am reminded of the critical role that museums, historic sites, archives, and preservation organizations play in safeguarding our collective memory. The work of preserving history has never been more important, and leaders like Brent continue to inspire all of us who are committed to this mission.

We look forward to working alongside him and the National Trust as we continue the important work of preserving, protecting, and sharing the stories that define our nation.
