Registration Deadline: Reframing History Launch Event

February 21, 2022

On behalf of the American Assocatiation for State and Local History, National Council on Public History, and Organization of American Historians, you’re invited to an evening event to launch “Reframing History,” a new set of evidence-backed recommendations for communicating about history. Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon foundation and carried out in partnership with the FrameWorks Institute, “Reframing History” is the result of a two-year, deep-dive research effort to understand how Americans think about history and how our field can more effectively explain what history is and why it matters.
To launch this exciting new project, we will host an in-person event at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History on February 26, 2022. The event will feature opening remarks from John R. Dichtl, President & CEO of AASLH, followed by a conversation with:
  • Clint SmithThe Atlantic and author of How the Word is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America
  • Martha S. Jones, Society of Black Alumni Professor and Professor of History, Johns Hopkins University, and the author of Vanguard: How Black Women Won the Vote, Broke Barriers, and Insisted in Equality for All
  • Jorge Zamanillo, Executive Director, HistoryMiami, and incoming inaugural Director of the new Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino
The event will be moderated by Anthea M. Hartig, Elizabeth MacMillan Director, Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

Event details are below. Please RSVP by Monday, February 21. Our space is limited; once we reach capacity we will no longer accept additional RSVP’s. We hope you can join us. Learn more about the project at AASLH.org/research.
